What Does the Future Hold for American Idol?

Since Paula Abdul didn't return for another season of American Idol, many fans have wondered how the show is going to survive. Now, however, since this is Simon Cowell's last year, it's hard to say what will happen to the show, especially if Simon and Paula both are on his new show, "The X Factor," which is also a talent show.

It started out strong in 2002, but some years weren't as good. For instance, 2007 was when the show was less popular, especially with the 18-49 year olds, the bulk of the fans. The touring of the cast didn't sell out in some cities, but it did come back strong in 2008. They did try to add Kara DioGuardi, which seemed to work. However, even though many enjoy Ellen Degeneres, it's hard to say if it's going to work on the show.

Although many will miss the comments thrown back and forth from Paula to Simon, it should be interesting how Ellen and Simon do. Ellen has no experience in music, but she certainly can hold her own against Simon. She will be good for the show, but is it enough if Simon leaves? After all, he's the one many love to hate and normally his comments are right on. He doesn't pull any punches, and although often harsh, his words may help the contestants the most.

It's hard to say what will happen to American Idol. Many have taken advantage of the show and done extremely well, like Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. However, if it goes away, think of the many great talents out there the world may never hear from and what a loss that would be.
