What Does the Future Hold for American Idol?

The program American Idol first debuted in the summer of 2002 and has held the number one spot in the ratings for the past eight years. However, with two of the judges the fans have learned to love and respect leaving the show, what does the future hold for American Idol?

During its existence American Idol has transformed unknowns into pop music stars, including Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. At first, most viewers did not like Simon Cowell because of his often brutal frankness and acid wit. However, as the show progressed they began to see that Cowell’s opinion was usually right on, they began listening to what he had to say, and contestants welcomed his advice.

The show now has an average viewer base of twenty million people. Even though producers claim that the judges do not make the show they are bringing in a big name, the Emmy Award winning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, to take Paula Abdul’s place. Ellen has a strong viewer base they hope will follow her to American Idol. At least there will be an overlap; Ellen will be with the show a season before Simon leaves. As of now, the network is taking their time in choosing a replacement for Simon Cowell.

The fact remains that American Idol continues to be a network cash cow. With Ellen as new judge, offering her own unique perspective throughout the competition, the network is hoping it will keep the viewers watching and voting. Cowell has stated that even without him he believes the show could continue for another ten to fifteen seasons.
