Randy Jackson has had a long and illustrious career in the music industry as a Grammy-winning musician, singer, record company executive, music manager and record producer. As an “American Idol” judge, from the beginning Randy struck the middle ground between Simon Cowell's merciless critiques and Paula Abdul's protective mother-hen vibe. Many the time he has softened the blow after Simon's withering remarks have left some poor, deluded soul quivering in disbelief during the audition process. Even if he agrees with the acid-tongued Cowell, he delivers his own judgments respectfully and in a regretful tone that makes him a contestant and audience favorite.
Randy also plays the part of unofficial peacemaker between Simon Cowell and, well, everybody. Cowell has had a friendly but contentious relationship with fellow judge Paula since day one. With host Ryan Seacrest, Simon is often snarky and dismissive. Kara DioGuardi, who joined the panel of judges in 2008, isn't afraid to duke it out with the acerbic Cowell, which can make for some heated exchanges. Clearly, Randy has had his work cut out for him as the voice of reason.
Paula left the show over a contract dispute and Ellen DeGeneres will be taking her seat at the judge's table. She professes to be a big fan of Simon's and expressed her disappointment on her talk show that he will be leaving the show as well at the end of the season. It will be interesting to see if some of the shine wears off of her admiration for Simon after a season of close proximity. There have already been rumors that Ellen was ticked at Simon for reporting late for work. Randy has publicly dismissed the rumor, stating that he has seen no sign of conflict between them.
