Kelly Clarkson was the first "American Idol" in 2002. Part of what she won was a contract with RCA. Her first album, "Thankful" went double platinum; not a bad start and she hasn't looked back since. She began singing because it was her refuge when her parents were having money troubles and eventually, divorced. After being discovered in high school musicals, she knew what she was meant to do. She was told by an audience member, "You're destined to sing."
Clay Aiken was the runner-up in the second season, losing to Ruben Studdard, which was a surprise to many. However, he did well after getting a contract from RCA. His first album, "Measure of a Man," came out in October and went double-platinum. Even though he grew up singing in choirs and musicals he found a special calling at YMCA children's camps to help mentally challenged kids. Originally, he was considering trying out for "Amazing Race," but he was told by the mother of one of his students to try out for "American Idol," and the rest is history.
Carrie Underwood has accomplished so much since winning the fourth season of "American Idol" that it's amazing that she has only been on the country music scene for five years. Her first album, "Some Hearts," went platinum seven times. She has won many awards and Grammys to prove her talent. Carrie, in late 2009, became the solo woman singer with the the most top 10 songs on the country charts. Many of her fans started loving her on American Idol, when they dubbed themselves, "Carrie's Care Bears." It's hard to say how much she'll accomplish in the next five years.
