What a challenge it is for television to produce shows that people will become absorbed in and continue to follow! "American Idol" has played that role for a number of years in the last decade. It is currently the number one show in the Nielsen Ratings. The winners of the show have become quite famous with great fan clubs.
"American Idol" began playing on television in 2002. It is now seen in many countries throughout the world. It is one of three shows that has been number one in the Nielsen Ratings for five consecutive years. Major changes were made during 2008 through 2010 for "American Idol." The tryouts for the show have been broadcast, as well as the final performances. The judges in the show have changed with Paula Abdul leaving the show and being replaced by Ellen DeGeneres. Simon Cowell will leave the show in 2011. The opening broadcast lasted two hours and in 2007-2008, the ratings fell below expectations. In 2010, the opening show produced a large audience and the ratings rose. This was a surprise and quite exciting to the Fox Network.
"American Idol" presents talent on its show during the audition part that is sometimes odd, embarrassing, or very fine. Audiences love this sort of presentation and stay tuned. The semi-final and final shows are quite competitive and keep those watching guessing which will be the winner. The audience gets to vote on who wins, which is a draw to continue watching. Winners on "American Idol" such as Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and Carrie Underwood have become very famous singers and/or actors. They have won awards at the Grammy Awards, Academy Awards, and American Music Awards. It is no wonder that people love to tune in to "American Idol."
