The phenomenon of the show "American Idol" is that it has launched many new careers for many talented young performers. Its venue has screened thousands of applicants to find the chosen few who may have an opportunity to perform and accelerate their career. There are many gifted singers who apply to appear on "American Idol," but there are a select few who have the charisma needed to capture the hearts of the general public.
Simon Cowell has been exceptionally successful in the United Kingdom, introducing many reality shows as well as musical programs. He has brought his successful programs to the American television scene with as much success. Paula Abdul has also been remarkably successful as a singer, choreographer, actress, and television personality. The pairing of Simon and Paula as judges on "American Idol" has made for some very interesting television.
The exodus of Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul may have an effect on the overall popularity of the show, but only time will tell. Each has added color and interest to the method of judging candidates for the show and their absence in a way may make the show a little less interesting. However, no one is indispensable. And in that vein, debate is now going on as to who would be good replacements for both Simon and Paula. Guest judges have been appearing at various audition shows and support seems to be growing for at least one judge who seems to manifest the qualities of both Simon and Paula, the sharp tongue and the pleaser.
