There are various reasons for people to isolate themselves from others and the author makes several good ones. People may experience more than one reason and the cumalative effect could be quite devastating. Losing a parent, spouse or loved one does affect people to become isolated from others -- some can't bear to be with other people socially and feel guilty for having the slightest amount of happiness. Others can't bear to hear more words of sympathy from friends and family. Others can withdraw themselves due to a abusive or strict childhood where they were kept away from others at the time.
An addiction problem may be the culprit as well -- people may isolate themselves to keep others from knowing of their addiction or to keep themselves out of temptation's way. Many people don't like to be judged on past mistakes and may feel isolation is better than criticism.
People who have been "used" by others during their lifetime may also tend to isolate themselves -- this can be on a personal level or on a business level and both can result in one's isolation from others. Putting up a wall around you and isolating yourself can keep away some pain but it also takes away any chance of happiness you may find.
