Who is this new American Idol judge that even has Simon Cowell agreeing with her professional assessments? Kara DioGuardi is not new to the music industry. She’s an award-winning songwriter and producer and, as those of you who have been watching Idol this season know, she is very knowledgeable about music and what does and doesn’t work vocally. Her songwriting talent is immeasurably impressive. Her songs have graced over 100 million records, including such Grammy award winners as Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Santana and Pink.
Major recording artists like Britney Spears, Jewel, Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff, Katharine McPhee, Jessica Simpson, Bo Bice, Taylor Hicks and countless others have recorded Kara’s music. In fact, she has received 10 BMI Pop Awards for “having written the most performed songs on radio,” according to American Idol News. More than 165 of her songs have been included on multi-platinum selling albums. Kara is co-owner of Arthouse Entertainment, where she coaches and mentors songwriters and producers, while developing and producing new artists. Kara is most certainly well-qualified to sit beside Randy Jackson and the other Idol judges.
“Kara tells it as it is,” says American Idol’s executive producer Ken Warwick, and “she’s very strong-willed.” It’s very obvious that Kara knows her stuff and is a good balance for Simon Cowell, who respects her musical knowledge. Kara has a great ear and is a brilliant singer, but she chose to remain behind the scenes as a writer and producer. Kara is also vice-president of A&R at Warner Bros. Kara’s best advice for up-and-coming singers: “Be you. Don’t try to be anybody but you.”
