In 2005, Bo Bice finished a close second to Carrie Underwood in the fourth season in the hit show American Idol. Born Harold Elwin "Bo" Bice, Jr., in November 1975, he has been plagued with stomach and intestinal problems for the majority of his life.
Bo Bice was diagnosed with intussusception in October of 2006, and he was immediately treated by surgically removing the portion of small intestine that was affected. Intussusception is a medical condition where a portion of the small intestine basically slides into another part of the small intestine, like the parts of a collapsible telescope that slide into each other. The part that slides in is considered the intussusception.
Because it will block the small intestine, and Bice has been diagnosed with a blocked intestine on several occasions, the patient can be plagued with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramping, fever and constipation. These symptoms are varied and can lead to other diagnoses, so it is difficult to pinpoint the true cause. The disease is usually found in children, and Bo's doctors believe that he has lived with this ailment since he was a child, so he has been suffering for a very long time.
If the doctors had not surgically removed the damaged part of his small intestine, Bo Bice could have died within three to five days. Now that the damaged portion has been removed, doctors are confident that the intestinal problems that have plagued Bice for the major portion of his life are over.
