Anthony Federov was the fourth place winner in the fourth season of the hit television show American Idol. He was likened to Clay Aiken during his stay on the show. To some, that was a compliment, and to others it was an insult.
The similarities were there. Federov sang mostly ballads when he was on Idol, as did Clay Aiken. They both had similar looks and some of their movements even seemed similar. Federov also wore glasses like Aiken, but soon enough, the staff on American Idol suggested that he lose his glasses and get a more contemporary look.
That is where the likenesses ended. Federov had a tracheotomy when he was a child and no one thought he would ever be able to talk, let alone sing. He was born in the Ukraine. He has said several times that he thought he was going to get a record deal from his high finish at American Idol, but that did not happen. After Idol, he did do a stint on Broadway in the Fantasticks, but has been working on his album by himself. He has just finished signing with AMI for a record deal. His album is due to be released in March.
Like Aiken, he had to start all over again and work his way to the top. He has said that his experience on American Idol was what any young singer needs for the exposure, and the fact that he finished fourth in the intense competition was a great boost to his career.
