Pop singer Jordin Sparks was born in Phoenix, Arizona on December 22, 1989. Sparks started singing lessons at the age of fourteen, but was singing since she was 2 years old. Jordin attended Sandra Day O'Connor High School for part of her high school years, but was later home schooled to accommodate her budding singing career. After she completed her high school requirements, Sparks went on to attend Northwest Christian Community College in Phoenix, Arizona.
Before trying out for the national talent search American Idol, Sparks had already won the Sprite Rising Star Award and the Gospel Music Association CMA Award for her vocal talent. In addition to those honors, Sparks was hired to be a plus-sized model.
It was the summer of 2006 when Sparks auditioned for American Idol. During the show's run Sparks acquired the nickname Sparkplug. She was never chosen as one of the bottom three contestants throughout the voting rounds. In May of 2007 Sparks was chosen by a national vote as the winner of American Idol's sixth season.
Since winning American Idol, Jordin Sparks has kept busy. She has appeared on several television programs, including The Today Show and Live with Regis and Kelly. Sparks also participated in the American Idol LIVE Tour in 2007. Aside from her television and radio appearances, Sparks has spent her time recording music. She released her first single, "This Is My Now" in August, 2007, followed by her self-titled first album in November, 2007.
Sparks has also sung the national anthem at Super Bowl XLII and at Game 1 of the 2007 NBA finals. She also performed the anthem at the 2009 NFC Championship game in her hometown of Glendale, AZ. Sparks has also launched her own clothing line which is appropriately called Sparks.
