At first, Bo Bice and his band members weren’t sure if they wanted to travel into a war zone, but there is a charity group called Stars for Stripes that they decided to work with. They set up celebrity tours at some of the smaller, forgotten bases and camps that never get entertainment of any kind. Of late, it seems that most of the artists that will do tours for the troops are mostly country music celebrities. All the celebrities so far have done it for free.
They were able to tour in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. Some of his favorite memories are of when he would get to spend time with the troops while they sat in their recreation halls and sang their own songs. In February, he traveled to Afghanistan for the second time, again with the group Stars for Stripes. They performed for about an hour, again at remote camps. It gave him a chance to also visit with many wounded soldiers. He made the time to sign autographs for some of the troops. He tried to keep the visit to Afghanistan quiet, but obviously it got out.
Bo’s opening act was comedian Jackie Martling. It was his first time to perform for the troops overseas. His jokes helped to entertain and raise the spirits of those soldiers that he and Bo were performing for. Bo also wrote a song especially for the troops he’d be visiting. The song he wrote is called American Blood. The song he wrote talks about how American blood is being spilled in places where there are no battle lines and how it’s hard to tell who is missing and who has been lost.
