Born and raised in the state of New York, she began her career as a songwriter. Many of Dioguardi’s songs have reached the top ten and she has also participated in singing back up vocals on many of her songs. DioGuardi is also known for her generosity; she works with Phoenix House, which helps those with substance abuse problems. Kara helps troubled people by getting them into the studio to turn their lives around.
Kara began her reality career in 2006 when she was a judge on a show called "The One: Making a Music Star." Although her first reality show bombed in the ratings and was canceled after two short weeks, it may have been exactly what she needed to land her next roll.
After years of the hit reality show "American Idol" having just three judges, in 2009 the show decided to switch things up a bit and added a fourth judge. Kara DioGuardi was the lucky one selected for the spot and was welcomed by fellow judges Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell. DioGuardi was no stranger to "American Idol," the judges or the contestants. DioGuardi has written many songs for contestants and winners that have appeared on the show and she has worked with fellow judge Paula Abdul in the past.
Many fans are in favor of the show adding DioGuardi as a fourth judge, but it has yet to be seen whether it will help the failing ratings. DioGuardi is engaged to her longtime boyfriend Mike McCuddy and the couple has yet to decide on a date to be married.
