Kara DioGuardi, the new American Idol judge for season eight, was born December 1970. Kara grew up in New York. She received a political science degree from Duke University. Kara’s field of expertise is being a professional songwriter. After college, Kara worked for Billboard Magazine in the publishing and marketing departments. By 1995, Kara had a successful record deal with MCA. However, her songwriting career didn’t take off until she received a break from her friend and fellow judge Paula Abdul.
Kara has written songs for Australian, Latino and American singers. Most of her hits have been with female artists. Some of the more popular female artists have been Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion and Pink. Ms. DioGuardi has written or co-authored songs for American Idol singers such as Kelly Clarkson, David Archuleta and Bo Bice.
Kara also co-owns a publishing company called Arthouse Entertainment. Her songs have been on albums that have cumulatively sold over 100 million units. Kara has won 10 BMI Pop Awards for the most-performed songs on the radio. Kara also has sung backup on some of the hits that she has written.
It has been reported by those in the industry that Kara is honest, yet fair. Some say she’s probably the most qualified of all the judges to provide constructive criticism. Kara says that she will be tough when she needs to be and soft when she feels it’s required to get the point across to the contestants.
