Bo Bice first became a household name in 2005 when he captivated audiences across the country with his performances on American Idol. With his Southern-influenced rock style, Bo won over millions of fans and made it to the final show, where he finished runner-up to Carrie Underwood.
Bo had been a regular performer long before American idol in various bands. He first became a professional in 1997, and only tried out for American Idol on a dare from his mom. His career has been on the up since then, but during that time he's also had to deal with some serious medical problems.
Between August 2005 and October 2006, Bo has endured severe stomach pains, two related surgeries, and countless hospital visits. He continued to perform and participate in music ventures even while going through the pains and discomfort of his condition. These intestinal problems Bo had been having for countless years may have been with him since birth, according to physicians.
The ailment he has been living with is called intussusception, and is normally found in small children up to six years of age. The intestine folds into itself, creating a telescoping affect. Once this occurs, the folded area could lose its blood supply and become swollen and painful. If left untreated, it could result in blockage, tearing, and then leaking into the abdomen. The end result could be life threatening. Bo's surgery was intended to repair this damage. His physician was very optimistic for a complete recovery. So far, so good- since the surgery, Bo has been pain free with no recurrences of stomach pain.
